Cross-border treatment at the top 1% of hospitals in the US

Survival should never come down to borders, or cost

When diagnosed with a critical illness like cancer, you want the best available treatment at leading hospitals and performed by the best doctors and medical team, including surgeons, oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, nurses and all the multidisciplinary experts involved in complex cases. In many cases, this means looking beyond your local hospital.

Preferred Care is about identifying, paying and delivering a quality controlled, best practice treatment. The top 1% of hospitals in the US is where we have the evidence to support our best practice and outcome approach. Here’s why:

  • Specialization in disease & treatment - performed by experienced specialists and recognized leaders in their fields.
  • The best recovery rates - statistics confirm that the US has higher 5-year survival rates than countries in the EU. The top 1% of US hospitals have even higher patient results.
  • Clinical and biomedical innovation, the highest spending on R&D - From private and public sources, larger than all OECD and EU countries. This ensures groundreaking advances, quicker uptake and deployment of new technologies and clinical innovations to patients. This level of research ensures that the latest, state-of-the-art treatments are available to Preferred Care members.
  • A patient first, consumer-focused approach - The US takes a patient-consumer approach to healthcare; Preferred Care was designed to provide patient-centered care and empower patients through informed decision-making, personal care management and patient advocacy.
  • Volume Matters -  practice makes perfect: research shows that medical teams and hospitals that perform the most procedures have fewer medical errors, complications and consistently achieve the best results.
    • Critical Mass - The top hospitals tend to be affiliated to the the largest, best funded and well known universities, like Harvard and the affiliated Harvard Medical School Hospitals.  They are also large biomedical clusters of innovation, attracting top talent from around the world. Due to their size, these centers of medical excellence also treat more cases, including rare types of cancer, than many local hospitals in smaller countries.
  • Independent, publically available hospital rankings - no other country performs these like the US does: evaluated annually on hard and soft data, patient outcomes and safety, medical errors, number of nurses, reputation within the medical community, patient satisfaction, and by third parties and by doctors themselves.
    • Names you know and can trust - Preferred Care members are treated at the top 1% of hospitals (and Childrens hospitals) ranked across multiple specialties.
    • This year, out of 5,000 hospitals evaluated in the US, only 18 made the cut to join the "Honor Roll" of US News & World's annual Best Hospitals report, the most comprehensive independent annual rating sytem..

Unlike most general medical insurance plans, Preferred Care is not tied to any single hospital or care provider.

Instead, we ensure that the funds follow the patient, focusing on where the best treatment team and hospital is for our member's particular condition, and where hospitals are open to teaming with a patient-involved, quality controlled process. The policy pays for the treatment and medical protocols that the treating doctors recommend - not reimbursing some procedures and leaving patients footing the rest of the bill.

Bridging the gap between the local and global best.

There are excellent doctors, nurses and hospitals across the world, but you want to make sure that you have 'all star teams', with the resources behind them.

As patients and international health consumers we are also the first to recognize and experience the strengths and shortcomings of various types of national healthcare systems. Our cross-border programs and global focus allows us to look beyond geographies and national pride, instead seeing the merits and ways to improve both - through increased patient choice, opening broders and removing barriers to 'captive' health consumers and overstrained local hospitals.

We work with the top hospitals in the US, not the US per se, and for the reasons cited above.  These hospitals are the biggest and best funded centers of medical excellence, with budgets larger than some small islands and with the medical expertise and size to treat complicated and complex cases - the illnesses patients travel for. It's one of the reasons the US is the number one exporter of health services, particularly quality health services.

These hospitals have the cutting edge technology and treatments that are so important to battle critical illness head on and prevent death and poor patient results like complications and long-term disease.

It's true: the world's best treatment, and US healthcare, is expensive - but Preferred Care is not.  We made sure that everyone could afford to access the best. Preferred Care It's the most affordable and sensible way of including cover at the US top hospitals - particularly if you compare to the cost of including US hospitals to your worlwide private medical plan.

Only you decide whether to travel to the US for treatment, armed with information that you have the right diagnosis and the most appropriate course of treatment. If you choose to travel to the US, your Preferred Care policy will pay directly for the medical costs and travel and accommodation to the US for you and a companion up to the cover limits (see the Key Facts Policy Summary document). You will not have to pre-fund your treatment or deal with claim forms or reimbursement hassles.
